I've been researching different Silcone products for the sealing, here are the ones so far that sound decent. But i don't know that well which would be good for an aquarium/PC, so drop me aline of suggestions

I had brainstorming session with one of my friends. here's the stuff pertaining to the AquaPC
Friend #1 says:
um. You defininately need to use a non waterbased product.
AquaPC says:
ya
Friend #1 says:
and it either needs to be sprayed on. or diped in
AquaPC says:
how about brushed on?
Friend #1 says:
bad idea
Friend #1 says:
wont be even or through enough
AquaPC says:
ah
AquaPC says:
do u have any suggestions as to what i should use?
Friend #1 says:
how good do you want it to look?
AquaPC says:
well, i want it to be as see through as possible, so that it will look cooler in the water
Friend #1 says:
then i woudl stay away from brushed on...
AquaPC says:
okay
Friend #1 says:
do you have parts laying around?
AquaPC says:
i got a floppy drive, and a HDD that's it for now till i get a older pc to do this with
Friend #1 says:
um i would test parts before i did it to a whole system
AquaPC says:
yeah, what do u suggest i test first?
Friend #1 says:
well you woudl need extra parts to do it...
AquaPC says:
yah
Friend #1 says:
I would star with maybe epocsy
AquaPC says:
epocsy? or do you mean epoxy
Friend #1 says:
sure. But it would be kinda expensive. and you would want to leave your heat sink on.
AquaPC says:
definately
Friend #1 says:
its kinda hard to work with, b/c youhave to mix 2 chemicals to start the reaction... but if you can get enough you could do it. I would aim for a 2mm or more thickness over everything
AquaPC says:
of epoxy?
Friend #1 says:
but its thick so hard to spread thin... yeah epoxy
Friend #1 says:
also try to get a card that has onboard video so you dont need a video card or any PCI slots
AquaPC says:
i'm trying to find one that does have on board
AquaPC says:
but not one too new to make it a waste of a computer
AquaPC says:
anyother suggestions for the sealent?
Friend #1 says:
sealent around the edges? clear silicone
AquaPC says:
no for keeping the water off the mobo. perhaps an alternate to epoxy
Friend #1 says:
If you can get clear enough silicone
Friend #1 says:
its cheaper and you could use it on thick...
AquaPC says:
what stores would have that?
AquaPC says:
...would silicone be dangerous to the mobo or cards?
Friend #1 says:
hardware stores... Canadian tire...
Friend #1 says:
and im not sure. i know when it drys its pertty inert but the solvent in it im not sure
AquaPC says:
cuz ain't it it's own conductor?
Friend #1 says:
silicone conducts under certain conditions
AquaPC says:
like what?
AquaPC says:
being spread on amobo underwater? surrounded by fishies?
Friend #1 says:
i dunno but its used in computer CPUS.
AquaPC says:
i know that
Friend #1 says:
I would say the stuff you get in the silicone tubes is not. but thats just me
AquaPC says:
that's why i was wondering
AquaPC says:
hmm... that's the same stuff they use to seal the bath tubs right?
Friend #1 says:
exacally, and windows.....
AquaPC says:
so it shouldn't hurt the fishies
Friend #1 says:
I would say it wont. But i dont know how chemically sensitive they are
AquaPC says:
hmmm....
AquaPC says:
how would the silicone be affected by heat from the mobo?
Friend #1 says:
you could look into what ever they seal aquariums with
Friend #1 says:
silicone as an element is heat resistant
Friend #1 says:
but i dunno about this stuff
AquaPC says:
oooh nice....gotta find that out
Friend #1 says:
once its all set up you will probally want to have the water tested before putting fish in
Friend #1 says:
as in temp and ph. ect
AquaPC says:
yeah turn it on before i put the fishies in
AquaPC says:
cuz my mobo in my tower runs just under 40c and apparently fish can only tollerate up to 80 f
Friend #1 says:
um. well i dunno. You might beable to get tropical fish.
AquaPC says:
yeah that's the onese i'm talking about
Friend #1 says:
and the water temp wont hit 40, thats how hot coffee is
AquaPC says:
oh, how hot do you think it'd be?
Friend #1 says:
i dunno. But consider that the watter will warm the case that will warm the air, so it will cool the water?
AquaPC says:
case? air?
Friend #1 says:
or aquarium. and what ever is on the outside of the aquarium
AquaPC says:
ah
AquaPC says:
cuz everything is going to be underwater.
AquaPC says:
so how would the warm air outside cool the water?
Friend #1 says:
your room most of the time wont be that hot...
AquaPC says:
no
Friend #1 says:
especially in the winter
AquaPC says:
probably not
Friend #1 says:
and in peoples houses the fish are ok when room temp is that high....
AquaPC says:
yeah
AquaPC says:
but i'd still have to test the water temp for a few hours/days
AquaPC says:
before i move the fishies into it
Friend #1 says:
days. make sure its stablizied. and never shut the comp off
AquaPC says:
no i read people saying that last comment alot
AquaPC says:
u are taking this mod idea better than james callaghan
Friend #1 says:
well if you use lots of silicone it could work.
AquaPC says:
i plan to make it so not a single mm is left uncovered
AquaPC says:
would the cables need the silicone as well?
AquaPC says:
or just at the ends where the ports are
AquaPC says:
?
Friend #1 says:
they shouldnt. just thier ends...
AquaPC says:
okay
AquaPC says:
how about the hdd?
Friend #1 says:
the inside of the HD cant get wet.
AquaPC says:
of course not
Friend #1 says:
anything that moves cant get wet
AquaPC says:
totally cover it in silicone then?
Friend #1 says:
so HD, floppy, CD
Friend #1 says:
Well or keep it ouside.
AquaPC says:
i'm just going to have the cd and the floppy drives parts where u put the media into sticking well up out of the water but the main part will be submerged
That's it, so if you guys have any ideas feel free to send them my way
While looking online at people's submerged computers, i found noone had done a water one. all some sort of oil. Well here's my "notes"
==================================
disstilled water - doesn't conduct electricity.
distilled water - fish?
distilled water - corrosive
general hardware temp 40 C/104 f
muhahahahahaha,This is the first log entry of the AquaPc Project. I'm going to post links to the AOAForums where i first heard of this idea. As well as links to the French Guy's website.
